Introduction: The acronym M.B.B.S. stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. The first two initials M.B. stand for ‘Medicinae Baccalaureus’ (Bachelor of Medicine in Latin); and B.S. stands for ‘Bachelor of Surgery’ (in English). Despite the name suggesting two separate degrees, it is, in fact, one degree. It is an academic degree course dealing in Medicine and Surgery at the Undergraduate level.
The course is spread across 4 ½ academic years, divided into 9 semesters. Each semester is of 6 months duration. After the end of the academic study, a candidate is required to complete 1 year of compulsory internship. In India, an MBBS degree is a prerequisite to becoming a Doctor in Allopathic Medicine. Candidates gain an in-depth knowledge of the human body through theory, observe various types of surgeries and gain practical experience through dissection of bodies. The MBBS is one of the most sought-after courses among Science students after class 12th. Competition is tough and seats are limited. In 2018, the total number of students in India who appeared for NEET is more than 13 lakhs whereas the total number of seats in India is just above 50 thousand! More often than not, students miss out on their preferred colleges not because of lack of marks, but due to lack of guidance and knowledge.
